My sons just love Cheesy Garlic Bread made with a french baguette (full disclosure, I don’t always make the fancy cuts!) and last week it was just them eating, so I only needed half a loaf.  They were also having spaghetti (nothing fancy, just some whole grain pasta and a jar of their favorite sauce) and Caesar Salad.  But I had no croutons, which, to the boys, are what makes a salad worth eating.

So I decided I would make croutons.  How hard could it be?  When you think about it, it’s just a few slices of dried bread that someone seasoned, put in a bag and decided to put a high price tag on…

I cubed the bread and put it in a large roaster, sprayed the cubes with cooking spray  tossed them around, then seasoned them with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, and baked at 400, until they were crispy.  It took a grand total of 15 minutes.

Over the weekend we had some Italian bread leftover from sandwiches, and I cubed up some of that, but used 1/4 a package of salad dressing mix that was in the pantry.  The boys voted these the best of all.  So now in our pantry is a big jar of croutons, about $10 worth in my estimation, all for less than $2.

The next time your meal plan calls for salad, make your own croutons!
